Botan App vs Planta: Features, Accuracy, and Pricing Compared

Botan App vs Planta Features, Accuracy, and Pricing Compared

After testing both top care apps, Botan emerged as the better option for most plant owners. It combines instant species-level identification, automated disease diagnostics with practical recovery plans, and personalized care in one place. Meanwhile, Planta is a strong care scheduler with its own online community.

I compared the tools on multiple criteria, including feature range, identification and disease-diagnosis accuracy, and pricing. Read on for a detailed Planta and Botan App review.

What Is the Botan App?

What Is the Botan App?

The Botan identifier & care app is a virtual assistant with many effective features:

  • Species ID in about 3 seconds —  shows the plant’s botanical and common names, origin, and basic care.
  • Database of 30,000+ species — includes rare and exotic species. AI suggests the most likely species even when there’s no confident match.
  • Plant disease ID — covers multiple common and rare plant diseases, gives you the most likely diagnosis, a treatment plan, and estimated recovery time.
  • Custom care plans — created for every plant, considering watering, lighting, fertilization, repotting, soil, and other needs.
  • Tasks and reminders — virtual garden, task system, and customizable reminders for every plant.
  • Many handy tools — Toxicity Check, Light Meter, watering calculations.
  • AI Botanist Chat — specialized tool for custom requests.
  • Platforms — iOS, Android, and web identifier.
  • No ads policy —  both at free and premium tiers.

Botan covers the full path, from plant identification to creating a disease treatment plan, and automates every step for the user.

What Is Planta?

What Is Planta?

Planta is a care-first app that offers the following:

  • Species IDs — shows species, toxicity status, and care tips.
  • Smart care scheduling — based on many conditions (e.g., light, pot, location, weather).
  • Smart reminders — cover watering, fertilizing, repotting, and misting.
  • Dr. Planta tool — disease diagnostics via AI chat with a treatment plan.
  • Light Meter — in-app tool to measure the lighting level.
  • Plant Journal — with tasks for easy care management.
  • Explore feature  — educational guides and blog posts.
  • Expert chat — replies from botanists within 24-48 hours.
  • Platforms — iOS, Android, web (no on-site IDs, though).

The app is a strong choice for scheduling and care customization.

Botan App vs Planta: Features Compared

In the Botan review and the Planta review above, I listed the key features, but they don’t highlight all the differences. I tested each tool separately to identify and describe them all.

Botan is more flexible, covers more features, and is more automated — it requires less from the user. Planta is more focused on growing conditions and offers good scheduling customization.

Identification Accuracy And Species Coverage

Recent studies confirm that such apps can reach 80-90% accuracy. Botan and Planta performed even better.

I identified 20 species (6 common houseplants, 8 outdoor plants, wild plants, and 3 pairs of look-alikes) on both apps, using the same photos for each to avoid any bias.

Botan shows a single most likely species when confident, while Planta shows the most likely one plus other possible matches. For Planta, I counted only the first suggestion.

Test MetricBotan AppPlanta
Overall species-level accuracy9.510.0
Houseplants6/66/6
Outdoor/wild plants7/88/8
Difficult species/look-alikes3/3 pairs3/3 pairs
Average time to result3 seconds5 seconds

The difference isn’t dramatic, especially given that Botan had only 1 problematic identification and its ID, health, and care features are strong overall. I also liked Botan’s ID system more.

Unlike Planta, it shows a single confident match instead of one most likely result and a few alternatives. It counted Planta’s first match as correct anyway, but Botan’s system eliminated any doubts and guesswork for me.

Botan App vs Planta: Pricing Compared

The apps have different pricing policies. Planta has a monthly plan. Botan doesn’t, but it offers lifetime access at a very affordable cost. Its premium plan also covers all features with no limitations, including species and disease IDs, treatment and recovery plans, and daily care tools.

Plan Botan AppPlanta

Unlike Planta, Botan offers a guaranteed free trial for all premium features. It also lets you keep access to all previously added plants after the trial ends and is more cost-effective in the long run because of its lifetime access plan.

What Really Matters When Choosing a Plant ID App

There are a few key criteria to consider first:

  • Accuracy and speed of species-level plant identification
  • Toxicity status for pets and children indicated clearly
  • Plant health diagnostics that provide a diagnosis, a treatment plan, and an estimated recovery time
  • Detailed care plans that cover every aspect, from humidity to watering
  • Reminders for every important action
  • Ease of use: intuitive interface and speed of IDs and building plans
  • Effective extra tools: Water Calculator, Light Meter, Botanist Chat, and similar ones
  • Pricing policy, value for money, diverse plans, lifetime plan availability
  • Knowledge base: blog, educational guides, gardening glossary, etc.

Features vary, and some tools may matter more or less to you, so set your priorities first. A useful care app should account for more than a species name, because light, temperature, humidity, water, soil, and nutrients all influence plant performance; our guide to how the growing environment affects plant quality explains why those conditions matter.

Which Plant App Should You Choose?

That depends on what you are looking for. Botan is a good fit for most users — beginners, houseplant owners, pet owners, and pretty much anyone who wants to make plant care as easy and automated as possible.

Planta might be a good choice for more involved users — those who want to create perfectly customized schedules, describe their plant problems manually, and contact experts no matter how long the response takes.

So, Botan is a better fit if you want an app that will make smart care decisions for you at every stage, while Planta suits more experienced gardeners who don’t mind putting in extra effort.

FAQ

Botan is more versatile and fully automated. It offers more reminders, near-instant species ID, and more environmental tools. Planta, in turn, offers care plans based on multiple growing conditions and on-site community interaction.

Yes. You can upload 3 photos of the plant (preferably of the damaged parts), get a likely diagnosis in 3-5 seconds, and receive a step-by-step treatment plan and estimated recovery time.

No, neither app works offline. Both need an internet connection to function properly. Without at least a 3G connection, you won’t be able to use species or disease ID tools, access your plant collection or care guides, or use environmental tools such as the Light Meter.
